| Denver Business Journal | | | By Dennis Huspeni | 02/05/10 - Denver, CO | They were tales of survival, ingenuity and sometimes luck.
Readers learned about companies that delivered seemingly recession-proof goods, such as micro-distilled whiskey and gourmet chocolates. They discovered companies using strong business savvy to navigate the often-treacherous waters of the slowed economy.
Given the unforgiving nature of such a business environment, "Beating the Recession" series readers hoped to glean any shred of helpful information they could from those successful companies.
Local business improvement experts were asked to weigh in on any trends or similarities they spotted among companies profiled in the "Beating the Recession" series last year. What they found are useful strategies applicable to many types and sizes of businesses:
• Strong leaders and managers are an absolute must for successful companies. • Providing the highest-quality product or service sets good companies apart. • If possible, take advantage of opportunities a recession provides.
"Many companies won before because the market was good," said Laurence Valant, president of Valant & Company, a Castle Rock-based business improvement consultancy. "But when times are tough, that reveals the weaknesses of everyone." |
